In September 2004, we organized a conference for 3M Unitek which involved bringing 70 University students from Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney & Dunedin - New Zealand together at Ayers Rock for a 3 day conference with a difference.

Clinical lectures were run for the morning session until lunch time.

The afternoon was then taken up with the “Survivor Challenge”. Our client wanted to create a memorable experience for the delegates, so what better way than by setting a team challenge, and given that Ayers Rock was the location, it was only fitting that the challenge was “Outback Survivor”.

Each state competed as a team together to win points each day to see who would be the inaugural “Outback Survivor Winner”. We made up team shirts that related to the city’s AFL or in NZ’s case Rugby team. Teams wore their shirts on the competition days & as you can see it looked great & helped create great team spirit!

Conference kits with a difference were made up to help support the delegates in the harsh Australian Outback conditions. With temperatures well over 30 degrees every day, the hat, water bottle & sunscreen were particularly useful! The Kits were uniquely packaged in Hessian & tied with string to fit the Outback theme

Hats were created especially for the conference using the conference logo that was custom designed for this event and was carried through on all conference materials, from the water bottle to the welcome letter.

Our first challenge made the teams carry 15 bamboo poles over a sand dune and then navigate their way to the pool where they had to construct their raft & then race it with up to 5 people on the raft at each crossing. This was interesting to watch!

Day 2 the delegates were let loose to explore the backdrop to the Conference, a once in a lifetime experience .

The last day of the Survivor Outback Challenge involved all teams playing in a Volleyball round robin. You might be able to guess who won….
